Somaliland went to the ballot box yesterday to elect their new president. The embassy visited Hargeisa along international partners to demonstrate the partners’ continued engagement to Somaliland’s democratic transition process and to support a peaceful, inclusive, credible and transparent presidential election (press statement: http://www.somalilandpress.com/__trashed-3/).
The election process was the first electoral process in Africa based on a iris-scan biometric voter registry which reduces the risk of multiple voting. The solution is provided by Danish tech company Atea Danmark.
Commitment and eagerness among Somalilanders – young, old, men, women – to exercise their democratic rights were visible and impressive during the visits to polling stations. The result is expected later this week. Denmark has supported the voter registration process leading up to the polling day, as well as training of political parties on responsible campaigning.
