Somaliland Bans Privately-Owned Kalsan Television

HARGEISA—Somaliland government have officially banned Privately-owned television, Kalsan.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Somaliland’s information minister, Hon. Osman Abdilahi Sahardid accused the channel of airing fake news aimed at causing confusion and posed threat to national security.

The minister has further stressed that the channel has clearly violated media ethical laws after it broadcast false news aimed at disrupting the smooth take place of presidential elections in Somaliland. Hon. Osman has sent directive informing the police commissioner, the interior ministry, the attorney general, the presidential affairs ministry and Somaliland journalist association that the private television has been suspended.

The event took place on 3rd November, 2017 after the channel aired news it sourced from social media. The minister went on to say that the airing of the news was meant to incite violence in Somaliland. Somaliland  is going through a sensitive period once the country is about to elect its president.
