HARGEISA–On 30th August 2016, the government of Somaliland has announced a new a directive requiring foreign journalists and media outlets to seek clearance and official guides from the Ministry of Information before covering any event or issue in the country.

The country’s minister of information, Osman Abdilahi Sahardid has commanded that all visiting journalists must inform the information ministry about their visit. The directive requires that they must submit the aim of their visit and the places that are about to tour.

The new order issued by the minister is intended to prevent bringing foreign-based journalists to Somaliland without respecting the laws of the land. Local and foreign stationed organizations bring the journalists to the country. The minister said that such acts may jeopardize the country’s national security as journalists are allowed to visit places that are not permitted to go.

If you are about to bring a journalist to Somaliland, all you have to do is to submit a relevant information pertaining to personal and contact details, sponsor, occupation and the organization sponsoring. It is a must that you should mention objectives of their visit and visiting places. The ministry bars all foreign journalists coming to Somaliland not to do anything unless they comply with the new directives in place now.
